John Neal letters, 1816-1864.

The collection consists of five letters: to Colonel Ebenezer Mosely, 1 Nov. 1816, thanking him on behalf of business partner John Pierpont; to Alaric Watts, 25 Sept. 1926, agreeing to write for his magazine; to Peleg Sprague, Maine Senator, 18 Jan. 1832, about a source of corruption and the Maine Boundary question (includes integral envelope); to Geo. W. Packard, 9 Oct. 1838, about copies of a published address not arriving (integral envelope); to My dear sir (Senator Fessenden), 23 May 1864, sending condolences for his son's misfortune.

American author and editor John Neal was born in Maine and raised as a Quaker, although he broke with the church at a young age due to his fighting. A career as a merchant was bankrupted by the War of 1812, and he turned to literature, joining Baltimore's Delphian Club.
